About JD Baker
I am a sixth-generation Oklahoma Cityan, a descendant of enslaved migrants that came to Oklahoma for a new opportunity. As the son of a firefighter and public educator, I am also the product of public schools, from head start to college.
Living in House District 88, I’ve seen firsthand the diversity of our district to the needs and opportunities that public policy can better support the livelihood of every resident of the district, regardless of income, citizenship status, race, gender, age, religion, sexuality or socioeconomic status.
After receiving my degree from the University of Oklahoma, I worked in the community and engaged with community leaders all across Oklahoma City, while working as the special assistant to the mayor. During my tenure at City Hall, I heard from many residents and helped bridge their voices to the mayor and city council in the development of MAPS 4, the transformational billion dollar initiative that is bringing investments to our parks, our seniors, our youth, while tackling the challenges of homelessness, mental health, addiction and so much more. While working with the mayor, I served as the liaison to the 2sLBGTQ+ community and veterans community, helping connect them to resources, leadership and advocating for these vulnerable communities on their behalf locally and nationally.
Later, I transitioned into the private sector, working for a local venture capital firm that invests in regional startups to help transform and diversify the state’s economy. Working with the startups, there are clear opportunities to create more quality paying jobs for Oklahomans, especially in district 88.
While managing my professional career, I’ve honed in my passion by serving locally on various nonprofits and initiatives. Currently, I am the chair for the Oklahoma City Black Chamber of Commerce, empowering minority entrepreneurs across the metro. I also serve on the board of directors for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, serving as its Public Policy and advocacy Chair. Through these experiences, I helped formulate policies and programs that would not only fight against poverty but also empower everyday individuals to be more self-sufficient by equipping them with services, education and new opportunities that are funded and backed by public and private partnerships. Most recently, I served 2 years on the OKCPS bond development and oversight, serving as its chair. Working with community leaders, we provided district leaders with the insights to best empower the next generations of educators that will create better outcomes for our kids across every corner of the school district. The investment in the new infrastructure serves as an investment in every child for exposure to living meaningful lives in the 21st century.
Elected leaders have an obligation and responsibility to empower and enable their communities to live fruitful lives, while advocating for public solutions that will break down barriers and create clear pathways towards individual and communal prosperity.
